Joint Sprains

A sprained joint is an injury that occurs when the ligaments that hold the bones together are stretched or torn. Ligaments are strong, fibrous bands of tissue that connect bones to one another and provide stability to the joint. When a joint is sprained, the ligaments are stretched or torn, which can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty in moving the joint.

The most common sprained joints are in the ankle, knee, and wrist. The ankle sprain is the most common among the sprains, it occurs when the foot is twisted or turned in an unnatural way, resulting in a stretched or torn ligament. Knee sprains are less common than ankle sprains, but can occur when the knee is twisted or turned in an unnatural way. Wrist sprains are also common, and can occur when the wrist is twisted or turned in an unnatural way.

How long until I feel better?

The recovery time for a sprained joint can vary depending on the severity of the injury and the joint affected. Recovery time can also depend on the individual's overall health and the effectiveness of the treatment.

In general, mild sprains (Grade I) typically take about 2 to 4 weeks to heal. Moderate sprains (Grade II) may take 4 to 6 weeks to heal. Severe sprains (Grade III) can take anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks or more to heal, and may require surgery in some cases.

The most important step in recovering from a sprain is to rest the affected joint and avoid activities that may aggravate the injury. Ice, compression, and elevation (R.I.C.E) is also an important step to reduce inflammation and pain. Physiotherapy will help to restore strength and range of motion to the joint.

It's important to note that these recovery times can vary depending on the individual case and it's always best to follow the advice of your physio. You will be able to have a more accurate estimation based on your specific injury and progress.
